High Country Brass Announces the Addition of a New Management Team
and Staff for the 2010 Season
|
By Mike Ryan, President of the HCPAA Board of Directors
In a bold and exciting move, the High Country Brass board of directors has made a
sweeping change in the management style of the corps. The board, in a unanimous decision,
agreed to form a management team to face the challenges of evolving as a competitive all-age
corps. It is felt that this move will make the organization a fun, family-friendly, competitive, and challenging environment!
In late August 2009, the HCB board of directors held a fact finding meeting with
George Lindstrom, Jon Van Zandt, and Doug Harris to listen to ideas and concepts
regarding a management team approach to operations. The concept is one that makes the
operations of the corps a well-thought-out, well-planned, joint effort between the director,
the board, and the management team.
The new management plan and the organizational items being addressed this year will help
not only with this season but with the future growth of the corps for many years to come.
The new team brings well over 100 years of combined drum corps and musical management and
instruction experience to the corps. High Country Brass extends a huge and heartfelt
welcome to George, Jon, and Doug.
Frank Lude, as Director of the corps, works directly with both the management team and
board of directors. The management team also has members from the board and corps who
are assisting with many issues. Board of Directors members on the team include Frank Lude,
Mike Ryan, Lisa and Tom Cowden, Erin Henderson, and David Truax. The team is meeting on a
weekly basis and is working very hard behind the scenes to make this corps a fun, exciting,
challenging, and competitive experience for all participants!
About the HCPAA Board of Directors
The High Country Performing Arts Association (HCPAA) is the parent organization of the
High Country Brass Drum and Bugle Corps. The HCPAA is governed by a Board of Directors
that consists of 9 members. The board has a large number of people who offer varied
opinions, views and experience levels to give it a broad look at issues. The board holds
meetings on a monthly basis.
The purpose of the board of directors is to provide a frame work of bylaws, procedures,
and checks and balances to ensure the continued successful operations of the corps.
Some of the items that the board are responsible for include good stewardship of all
corps funds and setting goals for the organization. The board is also tasked with
establishing and implementing a strategic plan for further growth of the organization
in 1, 5, and 10 year increments.
Additionally, the board determines dues and fees amounts based upon the goals and budgetary
needs of the corps. The board of directors sets a realistic budget in conjunction with the
management team and works very hard to operate the organization within that budget.
Some of the budget items include, but are not limited to, musical arrangements, music
licensing, rehearsal facilities, instruments and uniforms, travel expenses, first aid
supplies, corps functions, and instructional staff.
Other board member responsibilities are to designate and assist our recruiting team,
identify and implement means and methods of fund raising, monitor the ongoing
needs of the corps, and assist in the purchase or acquisition of new equipment.
An important part of the job includes interaction with the management team and the
Corps Director. The board is not responsible to make decisions of on field operation
of the corps; that responsibility rests in the very capable hands of the director,
staff and management team.
